Fear of Zika Virus keeping Gasol away from Olympics?
This summer the Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. However, Pau Gasol has claimed that he may skip out on the Olympics simply because of the Zika Virus scare which has hold of the country these days. The Spanish basketball player said that all athletes should think about the situation in Brazil and decide whether it is worth the risk.
“It wouldn’t surprise me to see other athletes deciding not to participate in the games to avoid putting their health and the health of their families at risk,” said Gasol (ESPN).
He went on to say that some of these athletes are planning on having children in the future and it that is the case then they need to look after themselves first and foremost. The Zika Virus leads to serious birth defects and has a presumed neurological effect on adults as well.
The six-time all-star has won silver medals with Spain in 2008 and 2012 and has said that it is the responsibility of the Olympic committee to come forward with all information about the possible dangers of the virus and let people know exactly what they are dealing with so that athletes may decide if they want to go or not.
