Bryce Dejean- Jones had a promising career. He caught the eyes of many, as he showed perseverance and drive, during the beginning of his rookie career. The NBA mourns the death of the New Orleans Pelicans player, who was fatally shot early Saturday, in Dallas.
Jones, who was only 23 years old, visited Dallas to see his girlfriend and his daughter, for her first birthday, says his agent, Scott Nichols. According to Nichols, this was his first time seeing his girlfriend’s new apartment. That night, he returned to her complex, but, unfortunately, he went to the wrong apartment.
There are mixed reports about Jones and what condition he was in, as he tried to enter the apartment.
According to media reports, Jones had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend. He then left and returned later that night, intoxicated. When he tried to enter what he thought was his girlfriend’s apartment, the man who lived there shot a bullet through the door, and into the abdomen of Jones.
On the other hand, according to CNN, police spokesman DeMarquis Black explained that the man who lived in that apartment, which was right below Jones’s girlfriend’s apartment, heard someone enter the apartment, by kicking the door in. He stated that called out to the person, but he heard no response. So, he fired his gun.
Jones collapsed in the hallway and was transported to the local hospital, where he died, says the police.
It has not been determined whether or not Jones was armed. Meanwhile, charges haven’t been filed against the man who shot Jones. Texas is one of many of states that justifies the use of deadly force, when someone feels threatened, inside of his or her home.
New Orleans Pelicans players and coaches mourn the death of Jones.
"We are devastated at the loss of this young man's life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce's family during this difficult time,” the Pelicans said in a statement.
Jones was signed to the Pelicans in February, and played in 14 games before his broken wrist ended his season.
His agent, Scott Nichols stated, "He was a great player and an even better person…”
