Grey’s Anatomy actor Jesse Williams has sparked some outrage with the powerful speech he delivered, at the BET Awards last month. The Black Lives Matter activist spoke extensively on race and the US. During his speech, he addressed the deaths of Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and Rekia Boyd, who were all African American people, who died during confrontations with the police, according to the New York Times.
Williams stated, “Now, what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm, and not kill white people every day” (NY Times). He went on to speak on the lack of equal rights, in society. He elaborated on the strength behind the black culture, and how society’s cultural divide attempts to wipe African Americans out, no matter how much they’ve contributed to the world’s progressive nature.
His remarks prompted some praise and rage, as there are multiple petitions calling for Williams to be fired from Grey’s Anatomy. The petition quoted, “If this was a white person making the same speech about an African American, they would have been fired and globally chastised, as they should be, but there has been no consequences to Williams’ actions” (CNN).
