THE WORD | Alabama Passes Near-Total Abortion Ban

On Tuesday night the Alabama senate passed a bill that would almost completely ban abortion. Under the law, women will not be able to get an abortion after 6 weeks of being pregnant, which is when most women find out that they are even carrying a baby.

The ban would also sentence any doctor who gets caught performing an abortion to prison for up to 99 years. It is said that other states are passing similar bills in hopes to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The bill would only allow abortion in cases of when the mother’s life is in jeopardy and doesn’t allow exemptions for incest or rape victims.

According to CNN, American Civil Rights Union of Alabama Executive Director Randall Marshall said that his organization would join with the national ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and Planned Parenthood of Southeast to challenge the bill in court within "a few weeks" should it become law.
