Diahann Carroll was a pioneer who left her mark on everything she touched. In 1968 she made television history by becoming the first African American woman to have her own tv show that didn’t portray a servant role. The tv series Julia, ran for 86 episodes before it came to an end in 1971. Her portrayal of Julia Baker was a significant role because it broke away from the standard of African American’s only being portrayed on screen as servants and help. That role not only uplifted the black community and culture, it acknowledged Diahann Carroll as a force to be wreckened with, especially after it secured her Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star in 1969.

THE WORD|Tekashi 6ix9ine Tells All

Updated September 19,2018:

In a third day of testimony, the rapper known as Tekashi 69 (or 6ix9ine) told a packed federal courtroom in Manhattan that he was not the only well-known rapper associated with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, a gang that prosecutors say is responsible for a string of violent crimes throughout the city.

As prosecutors were about to play a recording of a phone conversation, 6ix9ine, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was asked to identify the voices on it. He said one of them belonged to Jim Jones, whom he called a “retired rapper” and said was a member of the gang.

Original

On Tuesday September 17, the popular yet controversial rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine had his first day of trial. The rapper has been incarcerated since November of last year for racketeering and gun-related charges. During his brief time spent in jail and awaiting trial there has been a lot of chatter regarding his cooperation with law enforcement. Social media has ran rampant with memes, tweets, and jokes regarding the rapper’s lack of loyalty to his team and other rap colleagues. But, with Tekashi’s testimony, those rumors were put to rest.

Tekashi was facing multiple years in jail for his crimes. The rapper has been incarcerated for the past year and since then has accepted a shorter sentence by cooperating with law enforcement as a government witness. When asked in court

“At what point did you start cooperating with the government?”

He replied “The day after”

Referring to his second day in custody. Thus, as a witness, when the rapper was asked to testify on the stand, he did the expected… snitched.

During the trial the overnight sensation, was asked several questions regarding his former gang the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, and the role he played in the gang. According to Tekashi’s statements his role in the organization was majority fincancial benefit for the gang. He claims that the information he was given was limited as to where or whom the money went but he provided funds while they provided protection. Let’s be clear, he left no parts unsaid. He commented on inside information of the organization including initiation, and what crimes they typically performed. Along with that he went as far to naming other members and rival gang members like rapper Trippie Redd. As there was no complete video of his testimony, transcripts and quotes from that court session have been published online for all to see.

As the trial continues, more information will unfold. But after the first day it’s clear that the rappers image is largely tainted. As many fans and artists have published their opinions online. Although everyone hasn’t jumped ship and deserted the artists, his fan base does appear to be dwindling. This trial and his cooperation with the government leaves many wondering will he hang up his career or is there a possibility he will attempt to continue rapping? Considering the rapper has been incarcerated for the past 10 months and hasn’t released any music, it appears his chance for a comeback might not happen. But Tekashi 6ix9ine, has certainly proved himself to be a persistent artists and one who enjoys publicity, he might try his luck at continuing his career, it’ll definitely be interesting to watch.

One person is dead and nine others were injured during the Bayou Classic this weekend in a popular tourist attraction located on the heart of New Orleans, according to officials.

Police say the shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. Near the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville streets in the city's French Quarter New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison told reporters during a press conference. At least 30 officers were patrolling the French Quarter at the time because of the annual college football game.

Harrison said Police are not sure as to why the victims — two women and eight men —were targeted  or what was the cause of the shooting. However, two men, including one of the victims, have been arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.

“We’ve made a strong message that this was not the place or time to bring firearms to the French Quarter during the Bayou Classic event or any event,” Harrison said at a news conference early Sunday. “This was not something that should’ve happened. This is the wrong place to bring firearms. We’ve made that clear.”

Eleven people, including the two on Sunday, in the past two days, who have no connection to shooting were arrested for carrying weapons.

Police did not say whether any of the victims, or the two men who were arrested, knew each other. Harrison said investigators are looking for witnesses and interviewing the injured. The ages of the victims range from 27 to 37 in age according to the Times-Picayune.

According to Ronnie Buendia, a cashier at a nearby parking garage on Iberville Street, said he heard about four shots. “Everybody was running into the garage to get away,” he said.

“This is a very tragic and an unacceptable set of circumstances, especially on a night like this,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu told reporters.

Thousands go to Bourbon Street for the Bayou Classic, an annual game between two historically black colleges.

About a year ago, a man was fatally shot on Bourbon Street not far from the site of Sunday’s shooting, the Times Picayune reported. That shooting occurred after an argument.

In 2014, 10 people, including a woman who was killed, were shot as tourists walked along Bourbon Street, according to CBS News.

Officer Charged in Shooting Death Of Philando Castile

The suburban police officer who killed Philando Castile during a traffic stop has been charged with second-degree manslaughter on Wednesday after protestors demanded for his arrest after weeks of marches and protests.

Jeronimo Yanez, the Officer involved who shot and killed Castile will appear in court on Friday, was also charged with two felony counts of dangerous discharge of a firearm.

John J. Choi, the Ramsey County attorney said, "It is my conclusion that the use of deadly force by Officer Yanez was not justified and that sufficient facts exist to prove this to be true."

Castile 32, was a school cafeteria worker who was stopped Falcon Height back on July 6 by Officer Yanez of the St. Anthony police on a busy stretch of road near the state fairgrounds.

According to officials, Officer Yanez fatally shot Mr. Castile after spotting a gun, and a lawyer for Officer Yanez said that Mr. Castile did not comply with orders given by the officer.

However, Castile's girlfriend streamed the aftermath of the shooting on Facebook Live which painted a different picture claiming that her boyfriend had a license to carry a weapon and that he had been trying to tell Officer Yanez about the gun. According to sources familiar with the case claim that Castile had been pulled over many times before without any issue, and those who knew him personally claim he was nothing but a "calm and peaceful man."

After the release of the Facebook video the governor of Minnesota, Mark Dayton, stated that Mr. Castile’s race might have played a role in the shooting. Protestors spent days camped outside the Minnesota governor’s residence, and at one point blocked traffic and threw objects at officers on a nearby interstate.

This isn't the first time Minnesota has received backlash in terms of the way race and policing are handled. Last year, a Minneapolis officer fatally shot Jamar Clark, another black man, in an incident that also set off protests. And this year, an officer in suburban Edina was criticized by activists for confronting a black pedestrian, and a St. Paul officer was suspended after a police dog bit a man and a colleague kicked him.

Ku Klux Klan's Trump victory parade in North Carolina

IMG_3804.JPG

A chapter of the Ku Klux Klan says it will hold a victory parade in North Carolina to celebrate Donald Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton this week.

The Loyal White Knights are planning the parade for December 3, according to a post on the Pelham, N.C., group’s website advertising a “Victory Klavalkade Klan Parade.”

No exact time or place is specified, just the date and the message, “TRUMP=TRUMP’S RACE UNITED MY PEOPLE.”

The Loyal White Knights number between 150 and 200 members, according to the Anti-Defamation League, and were behind a rally in South Carolina last year to protest the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol building.
