THE WORD | Kanye West Managed To Get Out Of $53 million In Debt In 3 Years

On Tuesday (July 9), Forbes unveiled their latest cover featuring Kanye West, who they estimated made $150 million over the past 12 months (his team insisted "the number is even higher"), making him the third highest-paid entertainer over the last year.

This is a huge accomplishment for the Chicago kid, especially when you weigh in the fact that just three years ago Kanye claimed to be in $53 million in debt...So, how'd he do it? According to Forbes, Kanye's fortune can greatly be attributed to his Yeezy brand and partnership with Adidas.

"I'm just blessed through the grace of God to go from tweeting at Mark Zuckerberg" to ask for money, he said, to where he is today.

Back in August, The Blast reported that Ye was just shy of joining the billionaire club, claiming that Kanye's Yeezy brand had just reached a valuation of nearly $1.5 billion. The site cited the fact that Kanye was a majority stakeholder of the fashion label as further proof he was right at the line of being considered a billionaire.

While Forbes reported that Ye still hasn't earned the billionaire title just yet, the mag added "the never-modest" Mr. West would certainly "claim he’s there already. And then some."

THE WORD| Jason Mitchell Dropped From ‘The Chi’ Season 3, Netflix Film

Rising actor, Jason Mitchell, who received his break out role as Eazy-E in 2015 Straight Outta Compton film has recently been dropped by both his agency, UTA, and management company, Authentic Talent & Literacy Management, in what appears to be “allegations of inappropriate behavior”, as phrased by Deadline. The specifics of the accusations like who and what are unclear to the media, it appears that this isn’t the first issue with his behavior. The Chi co-star Tiffany Boone has previously addressed her concerns with the actor which were later resolved.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Boone previously had difficulty filming with Mitchell. It’s said that Boone felt unsafe working with Mitchell and her efforts to continue working with him have gone so far as to having her fiancé, Dear White People actor Marque Richardson, come to set on several occasions. Ultimately, Boone informed the Fox 21 producers that she could no longer work with him. Aside from Boone, several other actresses from the show came forward with grievances about Mitchell.

The source also added that along with companies UTA and Authentic terminating him, Mitchell has also been released from an upcoming Netflix film, Desperados, which he was already casted but is now replaced by actor Lamorne Morris. Along with the upcoming film he’s reportedly being released from Lena Waithe’s “The Chi” after they’ve been renewed for a third season. The show commented stating that he’d continue no longer than the current season. It’s unclear as to how, the show will move forward with Mitchell’s character, Brandon, considering he plays a vital role to the shows story line.

THE WORD | PBS Arthur’s MR.Ratburn Gay Marriage Reactions

Monday, May 13 the animated children’s series Arthur entered its 22nd season on PBS Kids. The new season kicked off with a bang! In the episode titled “Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone,” we learn that Arthur’s teacher — the popular and well educated Mr. Ratburn — is gay.

Throughout the episode Arthur, Buster and their friends attempt to break up his engagement after seeing Mr. Ratburn with a rather “pushy” woman who throughout the episode tells him to “toughen up”. Convinced, that marrying her would make both his life and theirs miserable the kids decide to take action without knowing the woman in question is his sister and not the bride to be. Upon the wedding, the kids are shocked to see him walk the aisle with someone else, yet relieved by how happy the couple appears. The kids decide to abort their plans to soil the wedding, and focus their attention on a bigger problem amongst the couple... the way they dance.

While this episode has been well received by the public, many are simply shocked that the series reached 22 seasons, it does leave some asking is the media pushing the LGBTQ agenda onto kids at too young of an age? Several shows on children’s networks like Disney and Nickelodeon have transitioned into the practice of creating and displaying characters who relate to and are members of the LGBTQ community. While many agree that education on the topic is important and the community presence and identity is needed, the culture asks, is it becoming too much for the children?

Christmas came early for many Chicago families, thanks in part to WGCI, Mountain Dew and Lil Durk.  Chicago rapper Lil Durk knows first-hand how tough it is around Christmas when you live in poverty. He donated money to this Christmas charity.

“I grew up with nothing, you know what I’m saying? But my momma, she did a good job; best she could do, but I grew up with nothing, so I know how it feels.” ~ Lil Durk

WGCI host Leon Rogers said Lil Durk’s donation was a side of rappers most people don’t see.

“I like the fact that you’ve set a standard that I feel like some other little homies out here should follow, man. If you really love your city, this is a way you give back,” he said.

13-year-old Kiara Brooks wrote to the station. Kiara’s father has been in prison for the past 12 years.

“My Christmas list begins with shoes for me and my brother, but most of all I just want my family to have the best Christmas ever,” she wrote.

Kiara wish came true, as WGCI gave her $1,000 for Christmas. Fred Spence, of Englewood was awarded $1,500; Spence has lost his job and didn’t have money to buy gifts for his wife and five daughters.

“They’re going to be real happy. I’m going to get a whole bunch of hugs and kisses,” Spence said.

WGCI chose the two winners out of a pool of more than 2,000 letters. Mountain Dew also sponsored the radio station’s Christmas giveaway.
